Zuckerberg argued that in our increasingly technology-driven society, education in online media is what will set students apart and boost the economy, according to a report in the International Business Times on Monday. He maintained that learning must start at a very young age.

Learning From Facebook?

It's unclear whether Zuckerberg has plans to facilitate more learning opportunities on his social networking site or if he's simply targeting a younger crowd of Facebook users.

The Web can indeed be a powerful learning tool, according to Judy Harris Helm, president of Best Practices and an expert in early childhood education.

"Students can interview experts from far away, visit webcams of sites, share their work and connect with other students of the world researching the same topic," she told TechNewsWorld.

Confirming weeks of speculation, Twitter has snapped up the popular third-party client TweetDeck. Statements made by the companies' chiefs indicate Twitter plans to use TweetDeck to cater to power tweeters -- users who constantly monitor their feeds and contribute a great deal of the network's actual content. The advertising potential among those users could be particularly attractive.

After much rumor and speculation, Twitter and TweetDeck announced what many had already concluded: the popular third-party client has been acquired by Twitter. The terms of the deal were undisclosed but various news reports put it between US$40 million and $50 million.

Of perhaps greater interest, at least to its users, are Twitter's plans for Tweetdeck.

Little has been said beyond the two companies' blog post on the acquisition. Reading between the lines, however, it appears as though Tweetdeck will be used to better service brands or heavy power users.

Twitter.com and the official mobile clients already leave mainstream users well-served, according to a message posted by TweetDeck CEO Iain Dodsworth.

TweetDeck, then, will fill the role for brands, influencers and power users, he said.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo also alluded to brands and marketers in his statement. His company will continue to invest in TweetDeck, he said.

Twitter did not return a request for further comment to the E-Commerce Times in time for publication.
'Better Integration'

Even without the push to service brands, the acquisition should be a win for its users, or at least most of them, Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group told the E-Commerce Times.

"In general, this should result in better integration between Twitter and TweetDeck with improvements to performance, removal of update limits and higher reliability. On the downside the product will likely also be used to present advertising and help generate revenue for Twitter more aggressively, which some may find irritating or distracting," he said.
Too Hot for Twitter?

There are other theories as well, of course, starting with the popularity of TweetDeck. "Twitter couldn't compete with TweetDeck on quality," Michael Hussey, CEO of PeekYou, told the E-Commerce Times. "So it acquired it instead."

Google has tweaked its Gmail system with a new People Widget. When reading a message within Gmail, the user will see info about the contact like recent messages, shared documents, upcoming events and so forth. The feature will be rolled out in the next couple of weeks.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has introduced a new tool to the social networking world using one of its strong suits: Gmail.

In the next couple weeks, Google will debut a feature for Gmail called the "People Widget." The widget will appear to the right of messages and display information about contacts, including recent messages, shared documents, calendar events, statuses and, perhaps most striking, photos. Users can use widgets to schedule group meetings and online chats.

The widget will be rolled out in the next two weeks.

Google has been continually updating Gmail with more functionalities and new add-ons. The People Widget helps make it easier to connect with contacts by consolidating multiple Google features, including Google Buzz and Docs, directly next to the Gmail message, according to the company.

Another connected feature is phone calls conducted through Google Voice. The widget's capabilities are similar to an existing Gmail add-on called "Rapportive," which connects with Facebook. Google did not note any connectivity between widget and other social networks.
